PARAMETRIC DESIGN: IZTO ADMIN BUILDING ELEVATION

There was an architectural competition between distinguished architects in Izmir, Turkey. I was involved in it to do an animated elevation for their project in one day. I was able to animate the elevation build in Grasshopper with sliders, then push the keyframes to 3DsMax with Centipede for rendering it. First is rendered in Vray, and the other in Mental Ray with shadows.

PHOTO RECONSTRUCTION: BEDROOM WITH A FIREPLACE

In this experiment, I try to reconstruct an interior from one photo. All textures and models are created from scratch by units that calculated from the photo guidelines and try to imitate the textures in the photo as much as I can. I learned a lot during this experiment on how to use Mental Ray light and camera, and the 2 point perspective camera corrections using 3DsMax.

VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION: THE HAHN VILLAGE

This was part of an Museum project to show the virtual reconstruction of an ancient village located near Newtown, Ohio. I was asked to create the village based on the remains of the archaeological site. I created the assets of the village houses in Maya.I used 3DsMax for the renders. For real time animations, I used UDK using Mixamo animations.

EXPERIMENTAL: ARCHITECTURAL VIZ IN GAME ENGINES

We collaborated in this experiment with my professor, Ming Tang for my MsArch Thesis in University of Cincinnati. I also collaborated with two MArch Students, in University of Cincinnati, to create real time animations in Unreal Engine 3 (UDK). They were designing two different buildings for their final studio project and I created the terrain and the environment in UDK and manipulate the terrain according to their design . We tried to create a better pipeline between Autodesk Revit and UDK for the first project, and between Rhino and UDK for the second one, and SketchUp and UDK for the third.

HONORABLE MENTION: SISLI HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT

Who can cope with a quadratic equation with two unknowns easily? Or who can remember the chemical structure of an enzyme in our body? Education is formed from lessons and the other periods related with it. But there are also the times when one could be free between these periods. These periods are the times one could show their power to the authority. It keeps students and the others inside to maintain the concentration of them, supposing that the time is not ticking outside of the school. It is quite out of the question that architecture could revolutionize all of those. Even though, it is possible not to isolate environment and the city from spaces that students and others related to the schools. This building proves to do that. How could an institution alienate itself from the life while it is claiming to nurture one for life?

4TH HONORABLE MENTION: MANISA MUNICIPALITY BUILDING PROJECT

The marketplace, primarily designed for one day of the week, also serves as a semi-public area on the other days. The structure of the lightweight canopy is designed in accordance with a tensegrity system and is wide enough to allow passage to the trucks that carry goods to the marketplace. The canopy, called the Cloud because of its lightweight and no visual preventers such as columns, covers a 125×40 meter open space to allow all the different usages of the space. The multi purpose hall, led by public stairs could create a calm place, where public can talk and share their issues about the city and meet with the mayor. The open activity area under the cloud canopy can be used for anything: as a traditional marketplace, as a festival or a concert area and as an exhibition/meeting place.

REGENERATE: GAZIEMIR ABDULLAH ARDA SQUARE

The recreation project of a big public space of Gaziemir, which had an old history and a winery house to be protected. First, relievo drawings led by Assoc. Prof. Phd. Selim Sarp Tuncoku and analysis of the site and interviews with dwellers was made. Conceptuals, preliminary drawings and the model of the design was led by Prof. Phd. Fehmi Dogan and Prof Phd. Erdem Erten. Finally scaled model and the 3D renderings were presented to Gaziemir City Mayor and dwellers.

PLATFORM OF THOUGHTS: URBAN ACADEMY IN ALSANCAK

Imagine a Platform of Thoughts, lying in foliage, welcoming all with its sincerity. This platform reaches to the path that pedestrians use invitingly and points to the seashore. This platform is such an open area that funnels people to spaces which overlook courtyard as they pass through it. There is always a place for you in the Platform of Thoughts. “The Knowledge Sharing Center” works like an activator, feeding the Platform of Thoughts. Therefore, it is the most important compound of all. This structure becomes specialized as it rises and creates isolated environments, where people can be by themselves. The elevation that forms the platform’s back side is where the parking space is and seminar rooms stand out from elevation.

THE CRACK: STUDIO HOUSING IN ALSANCAK

Imagine a living street between two building masses in which people can borrow books from the library, buy some music materials from the music shop and record their own music in the recording studios in the middle of Alsancak and they know that artists, painters, rock stars live right above them. They also know that they can meet them monthly at concerts held in the semi open public concert hall at the 8th level and the music museum at the 14th, which will be reached with the vertical street going up to public spaces.

DE VIN: WINE HOUSE IN URLA

With the way the building is buried into the terrain, while the floors go down with the terrain, they slowly turn into open spaces and an inner court, enabling the north-south line of the building to breathe. The sun light goes trough “the wall” at the entrance and casts shadows of a solid-void pattern on the ground. The guestrooms and the backyard ends with a door, “the cellar”, which is near the production unit, operates from the level +210.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE: ART OBJECT IN BORNOVA

An art sculpture can have unintentional meanings. It can serve kids’ games when they are playing around, on or in it. An orthogonal grid created to subtract pieces from a half wooden hemisphere in order to have a balanced solid-void. The pattern is carved from the floor and turfed. It represents the grid system of orthogonal subtraction, spreading on both sides, manipulating the shape of the pool and gathering paths of the playground, based upon that pattern.

INTIMATE IMMENSITY: ART INCIDENT WORKSHOP

Art Incident Workshop sought to research ”intimate immensity” in the creation of a closed form. In the workshop, we were expected to create a box with individualized intimate/ hidden spaces. These intimate spaces should house the found objects that are special and meaningful for us.
